Gustav Mahler: Symphony No. 2 in C Minor, "Resurrection"

After a six-year absence from Toronto’s concert halls, Gustav Mahler’s monumental Symphony No. 2 “Resurrection” makes its triumphant return to Roy Thomson Hall on June 25th, 2025. This marks the first performance of this beloved masterpiece in our city since 2019, making it a significant musical event for classical enthusiasts in Toronto.
Composed between 1888 and 1894, Mahler’s Second Symphony stands as one of the most profound works in the orchestral repertoire. Beginning with a funeral march and culminating in an awe-inspiring choral finale celebrating resurrection and spiritual rebirth, this 90-minute journey traverses the full range of human emotion—from despair and questioning to transcendent hope.
The performance features a full orchestra alongside a masterful chorus and world-class soloists who will bring to life Mahler’s intricate composition. The symphony’s famous finale, with its text drawn from Friedrich Klopstock’s “Resurrection Ode,” promises to be a memorable moment as the combined forces of instruments and voices build to one of classical music’s most powerful climaxes.
